2. Mid Cl9.  Brick.  3 storeys and attic, with late C19 shopfronts.  Moulded wood cornice. No 39 has tablet commemorating the fact that Thomas Hardy worked here as an architect's pupil 1856-62.  No 40 has tablet inscribed "William Barnes the Dorset poet lived here 1847-62". Nos 1 to 6 (consec)South Terrace, Nos 37 to 41 (consec), No 40A, No 41A and the Post Office form a group.
