Description
HIGH WEST STREET 1. 5191 (North Side) Nos 59 to 61 (consec) (Agriculture House) SY 6990 7/243 II GV 2. 1883. Architect. G R Crickmay of Weymouth. Brown brick, all details in ashlar. 3 storeys. Moulded eaves cornice. Balcony with urns at either end. 8 ranges of sashes. Giant pilasters at angles, and also flanking bays 3 and 6, which break forward slightly. Ground floor of bays 3,4,5, and 6 is faced with rusticated ashlar. Above these bays pilasters carry a full entablature, the cornice dentilled, and pediments above bays 3 and 6. All windows have shouldered architraves with keystones, those on 2nd floor of bays 3 and 6 with fishscale ornament and moulded cornices on consoles. Bays 1, 6 and 7 of ground floor and 3 and 6 of 1st floor have tripartite windows similar to rest, but with moulded cornices, and acroteria over. Bay 3 has double doors with elaborate moulded panelling flanked by ornamental pilasters with consoles taking pediment - shell motif in tympanum and swag on frieze. Bay 8 has a 6 panel door with fanlight. Nos 48 to 65A (consec)including the Shire Hall, Holy Trinity Church, the Museum, St. Peter's Church and monument to William Barnes in churchyard immediately south of West Tower form a group.
