LEIGH ST 6108 (off) VILLAGE STREET (North side) 8/43 Parish Church of Saint Andrew 31.7.61 GV II* Anglican Parish Church. C15, north aisle added c1840, church restored and chancel largely rebuilt 1854, architect Withers of Sherborne. Rubble stone walls, roofs of lead, slate and tile, with coped gables - parapets to aisle and nave. Separate gabled roofs to nave and aisle, with valley gutter. Nave, north aisle of 3 bays, chancel, west tower, south porch. Tower, C15, of 3 stages, with diagonal buttresses. Square stair turret on north side. Battlemented parapet with corner pinnacles. String course at base of parapet, with carved gargoyles. String courses at each stage, and moulded plinth. 2-light belfry windows with Perpendicular tracery and stone louvres. Main west window of 3 lights, with Perpendicular tracery and hoodmould continuous with string course. Main west doorway below this, has pointed arch in square frame, with spandril carvings. South slope of nave roof of lead, with parapet. In south wall, west of porch, a C19 3-light window in Perpendicular style, with hoodmould and head stops. Porch has slate roof and pointed arched doorway with hoodmould. East of porch a C15 2-light square-headed window with trefoiled lights. East of this a small rectangular high level window to rood loft, now blocked internally. Lead roof to chancel. In north and south walls a C19 2-light window in Perpendicular style, with hoodmould and head stops. East windows, Cl9, of 3 lights, in Perpendicular style, with hoodmould and head stops. North aisle, C19, has slate roof with moulded parapet. Moulded string course with carved gargoyles below this. Diagonal and intermediate buttresses. East and west windows of 3-lights, in Perpendicular style, with hoodmoulds and head stops. 3 windows in north wall, with segmental pointed arches and Perpendicular style tracery, with hoodmoulds and head stops. Internally, chancel has C19 trussed rafter roof with curved braces. C19 double arch-braced collar-beam roof to nave. C19 arch-braced collar beam roof to aisle, with carved stone corbels. North arcade has moulded 4-centred arches on octagonal columns with moulded caps - C19. Tower arch, C15, with continuous mouldings - no caps. Font, C13, church, on C19 base. Most pews, C19, but some C16 benches and bench ends. Carved bench end, reputedly from Hilfield Church, fixed to organ case. Other fittings C19.(RCHM Monument 1. (Dorset, Vol.1).)
