EVERSHOT ST 5704 FORE STREET (North side) 7/24 Parish Church of St Osmund 11.11.66 GV II* Parish Church. C12 chancel-arch reset, and tower-arch. C15 north arcade, and tower rebuilt. Church restored and largely rebuilt in 1852-3, and in 1864 by R H Short, when chancel, nave, north aisle and upper part of the tower were rebuilt. Ham stone plinth, coursed dressed stone walls with ashlar Ham stone quoins. Tiled roofs, with stone gable-copings and C19 crosses at apices. West tower, 3 stages, diagonal buttresses and bell-chamber are C19. West doorway with moulded jambs, depressed-arch head, and label stopped, C19. Panel-tracery window over, C19. Bell-stage windows with stone tracery, C15 reset. Stair-turret. C15, with C19 top and spirelet. Chancel, C19, diagonal buttresses with set-offs, gargoyles, pinnacles and crocketed finials, stone parapet with blind panel tracery above a fleuron cornice. East window of 3 lights, with ogee trefoil cusping, supermullions, and quatrefoil in roundel over centre light. Ogival crocketed label with foliage boss. North and south windows are of 3 lights, with panel tracery over, C19. North and south aisles overlap the west tower, 4 bays, 3-light trefoil-cusped windows with panel tracery over, and quatrefoil in roundel at centre. South doorway into south aisle with moulded jambs having fleurons. Inscription is carved stone letters painted: This is None Other but y House of God and this the Gate of Heaven". Corbelled-out stone canopy, gabled and with stone cross at apex. North aisle: C19, with windows similar to south aisle. Interior: Chancel-arch, C12, reset in north aisle entrance to organ chamber, shafted responds have tall scallop capitals, pointed arch over. Tower-arch, C12, plain jambs and chamfered imposts, pointed arch of 2 chamfered orders with sunk quadrant between. Nave: 3 bays with pointed arches springing from shafted piers and round capitals, north arcade, C15; south arcade C19. Roofs: Nave, collar-truss roof with 4-centred arch-bracing carried on carved angel-corbels. King-posts above the collar. Chancel-roof of same design, though with ornamental wall-plate. Mid C19. Fittings: font: stone round bowl with moulded band and convex into the cylindrical stem and hollow-chamfered base, C13. Piscina, in south aisle, C15 reset. Brass, reset in chancel to William (Grey), Rector, 1524-5. Latin inscription and figure of priest in mass-vestments holding chalice and wafer. Seating: nave and tower, 2 coffin-stools with turned legs, early C18. Loose in vestry: stone capital with carved figure of man with key (? St Peter), late C12.
