Description

GREENHILL 1. 1625 (South Side) Delta. Crown Cottage. Nos 6 to 11 (consec). No 19. (Formerly listed as Nos 3 to 11 (consec)) ST 6316 1/109 30.11.71. II GV 2. 2 storey cottages forming the west end of the south row in Greenhill, standing above road level behind high terrace pavement. Delta: C18 to C19 front, apparently C17 core (see RCHM). Plaintile gabled roof. Stone rubble front. 3 small 3-light modern wood casements above; 2 large 3-light windows with wood lintel below. Ledged door in frame; lintel. Crown Cottage: formerly 2 cottages (Nos 4 and 5). C17 probably. Roughcast front. Plinth. On first floor, 2 sashes without glazing bars. Below, 4 flush panelled door in moulded frame; 1 sash window to left of it another to right. Interior details. No 6 and No 7: probably C17 internally. 1 window bay and outer doorway each. Plaintile gabled roof. Stone rubble front. 2-light segmental headed casements; upper window in No 7 with leaded panes. Lodged doors in frames. No 8: probably C17 internally; same roof span as Nos 6 and 7. 1 window bay and door. Stone rubble front. 2-light wood casement above; sash without glazing bars below. Ledged door in frame to right hand. Nos 9 and 11: comprise 2 cottages stradding centre passageway. C17; structure said to return a stone with the initials and date "W" and "F R". "1664". On first floor from the right, casements of 3-lights, 2-lights, and 3-lights. On ground floor from left to right hand, 3-light casement, entrance to passage with wood lintel and 6-panelled door; 3-light casement. Leaded casement to rear. No 10: is situated to rear of No 9, beyond passage. Later construction up to C19 date of ashlar 2 storeys. 1 small window to left hand above and taller window, partly in roof, to right hand, 2 segmental headed windows on ground floor; modern half glazed door. No 19: adjoins No 11 to the east. 3 front of 3 windows, widely spaced. Plaintile gabled roof. Roughcast front. 3-light wood casements with older catches above. On ground floor from left to right, 4-light windows, 6-panelled door with pilasters and entablature; 3-light window; 6-panelled door in reveals behind late Georgian style doorcase; 3-light casement. All the listed buildings on the North Side of Greenhill from Newell Cottage to Belmont: and on the South Side from Delta to premises occupied by Godden and Curtis form a group.
