SY 6399 SYDLING ST NICHOLAS. CHURCH LANE, (north side)

Court House in grounds. Slight C16 remains (clunch); altered and enlarged late C18 by Sir John Smith and Elizabeth (Curtis). Early C19, east front completely altered and centre part added in Gothic Revival style, and other windows altered to match. Further restoration in 1864-8. Brick and clunch walls, stuccoed. Slate and stone slate roofs, with two gables at north and south of east front. Stone stacks on the ridges of the north and south wings. 2½ storeys. East front, 6 windows (first floor), irregular fenestration. Gable ends described first, then centre part and porch. Diagonal buttressing, with set-offs at all angles. String-course between ground and first floors carried through. North gable-end: French window with glazing- bars and moulded cornice, 12-pane sash over with separate returned label. South gable-end, twinned sashes with glazing- bars, single returned label over. Single sash, with label to first floor. Oculus in gable. The south gable-end is set back (west) from rest of front. Central remodelling, including porch has stone pinnacles to the angles, and a crenellated parapet. Ground floor has French window with glazing-bars, and a sash either side. Single returned label over. First floor has 3 12-pane sashes, with separate returned labels over. Porch immediately right of this, two-storey, front doorway has moulded stone jambs, and 4-centred head, 2-leaf front door, C19. Sash- window over, with returned label. Shield-of-arms over this, Smith with a scutcheon of Curtis. The north front has towards the west end a 3-sided bay of 2 storeys with canted sides and a dentil eaves-cornice. In the south front of the north wing is a stone cut with the initials and date S.I.E 1771.
