Description
ST 6601 CERNE ABBAS CERNE ABBEY
11/59 Guest House of 26.1.56 Cerne Abbey.
GV I
Guest House. Later C15, probably under abbot John Vanne (1458-70). Knapped flint and dressed stone walls (limestone), with mainly Ham stone quoins. Renewed stone slate roof (Cricklade, Glocs.), C20. Stone stack with C20 brick capping on ridge. Pineapple-type finial on west gable apex block. Two storeys. 4 windows. North elevation: 2 C15 windows with 2 trefoiled lights in a square head. Window of c 1500 in an earlier door-blocking has 2 cinquefoil lights with bowtell- mouldings in a square head, casement moulding, label with returned stops. Immediately east of this window: the east side of a C15 doorway, jamb and part of the 2-centred head survive. Remains (heads) of 3 C15 windows, further east. Middle of north wall, has a C15 oriel window 'restored and reset' (RCHM), canted with windows of two trefoiled and transomed lights in each face, with standards at the angles. Oriel rests on moulded corbelling. Either side of the oriel are two windows, originally similar to one face of the oriel. Stable door into former stable-conversion towards east end. Doorway in west gable, early C16, with moulded jambs, step- stopped, and 4-centred arch in a square head, with foliage spandrels and label, probably created when north doorway blocked. South wall of the building originally continued further east. Interior: main fireplace in west room with dressed stone jambs and continuous wood lintel carried over blocked door-passage. Fireplace in former upper room visible and blocked. Fireplace in south wall, east room, first floor, small with depressed-arch head. Probable fire- place in present east gable wall, (blockings/fissures). Ceiling-beam in west end room, with hollows and bowtells, early C16. Cruck roof-construction. Scheduled Ancient Monument, Dorset 26.
