Description

BEAMINSTER ST 40 SE 4/14 Walls, Gate-Piers and 2 Table-Tombs of Burial Ground 200 metres south of Knowle Farm - II Walls, c. C17. Flint stone footings of former barn, c. 33 foot by 18 foot, internally. Ashlar stone gate-piers on north side, with flat pyrammidal capitals. Iron gates, C19. Two table-tombs within burial ground: (1) Stone plinth and sides. Recessed pilasters with carved torches, downward pointing, hipped stone canopy over with plain projecting cornice. One inscription: Hine no II. To Thomas and Elizabeth Hine. Early C19. (2) Stone, with incised Soanian pilasters and plain capitals. Square cornice. Canopy has shallow pediments to each face with foliage decoration and Neo-classical foliate fans at the corners. 4 inscriptions, principally to John and Betsy Daniel, 1829, 1816. The Daniel family were an important Nonconformist family in Beaminster, with several generations of doctors. They owned Daniel's House (Hogshill Street, south). Burial ground commemorates James Daniel's escape to this site formerly his barn, after the Monmouth Rebellion, 1685. Source: R. Hine, History of Beaminster, 1914, pp 246-253.
