Description

FROME VAUCHURCH SY 59 NE FROME VAUCHURCH VILLAGE 2/59 Parish Church (Dedication unknown) 26-1-56 GV II* Parish Church. Cl2 core, much rebuilt in C17, when south porch added. Restored in 1879. Nave and chancel. Rubble-stone, flint and dressed stone walls. Clay tile roofs with stone gable-copings with cyma and ovolo kneelers. Stone bell-cote at west gable with cross over. South porch with banded flint and stone walls, stone gable-coping. Segment-headed entrance with hollow chamfer, label over with head-stops. Mixture of C17 elliptical-headed windows and C19 lancets. North wall has former Cl2 doorway with segmental head and nail-head label over. Square stone jambs, now a fixed window with lozenge leaded lights. Interior: chancel-arch, pointed, with massive chip-carved imposts, C12. Roof, of arch-braced collars carried on carved stone corbels. North of the chancel- arch is an opening to the pulpit, C17. Piscina, chancel, modern recess and set in it a scalloped capital with square drain in the top, C12. Font: square stone bowl with chamfered angles and lower edge, cylindrical stem and moulded base with spur-ornaments, C13. (RCHM Dorset I, p.118 (1)) Listing NGR: SY5994897208
