Description

MELBURY SAMPFORD ST 50 NE MELBURY HOUSE 2/121 Stable Yard immediately north of Melbury House GV I Attached Stable Yard, with west block of former north courtyard. Late C17 west (east) block, with early C19 stable-yard immediately west of this. Ham stone ashlar walls and Westmoreland slate roofs, with gable ends. 3 stacks on ridge. South end truncated, and castellated parapet added by Devey. 2 storeys and attics. 12 bays. Windows are 2-light with Ham stone architraves and cills, and flat stone mullions. Iron casements with lead lights and C20 metal casements with lead lights. Centre 3 bays have a pediment over with an octagonal bellcote. Doorway at centre has an eared architrave, with pulvinated frieze and moulded stone cornice. 2-leaf plank door. Blocked doorway towards south end of front. 4 blocked windows and a blocked doorway towards north end of front. Main stable-yard built behind this front, to west in 1801-2 by J Brettingham. 1 1/2 storeys. Main entrances to yard on north and south sides, to north with a segmental head. Windows are 2-light, cross- transom stone mullions, with cast-iron casements and glazing bars. Inside of north side: window, window, door, window, door, main entrance, window, window, door, window. Inside of south side: door, window, door, window; main entrance; door, door, window, door, door. West side of yard has 3 former carriage entrances, and 2 garage entrances. Plank doors. (RCHM.
