Description

SY 5785 CHURCH STREET, WEST SIDE 10/22 The Manor House 26.1.56 GV II* Detached Manor House. Late C16 front range, with attached north-west and north- east ranges, late C16. C17 north-west wing, with attached staircase-block to south. Rubble-stone and ashlar walls. Slate and stone slab roofs. Ashlar stone stacks to front range, with crenellated cornice at left hand. Stack to north-west range at south end, ashlar with a moulded cornice. Stone stack at west end of north-west wing, C20. 2 storeys with attics, throughout. Front range (east), of 3 windows including a 2-storey porch, left of centre. Porch has a gabled roof with stone coping and finial at apex. 2-light stone mullion windows left of porch, and to porch, mostly with lead lights and returned labels. 5-light stone mullion window, hollow-chamfered and with fixed re-leading, to dining room. 4-light version to first floor. 6-panel door in left hand side of porch, C20. Two C20 cornices to front, 2-light casements. North west range has a 5-light stone mullion window, with C19 casements facing west. C17 staircase block, joining north-west range to north west wing has a 2-light stone mullion window on the south side. C19 porch has sides with lozenge-lead lights with 4-centred heads. 6-panel door. C17 north-west wing, south elevation, 2 windows, 2- and 3-light stone mullions with lozenge-leaded lights. North-east range, former kitchen block has a 3-light stone mullion window on south face. Attached external stone staircase, mid C17, at rear centre, has a semi-circular landing with panelled pedestals and balusters; the pedestals have draped festoons and the balusters have foliage swags. Stair- case formerly at Kingston Russell. Interior: the inner north west range has a C16 fireplace with moulded stone jambs and depressed-arch head. North-west wing, upper room, east end, has a stone fireplace with Roman Doric columns, fluted and with a mantel-shelf, C18. Ribbed-panel window shutters. Staircases: in C17 staircase-block, has bulbous balusters, coupled Roman Doric columns on the landing and ramped handrail, early C18. The staircase in well between Dining Room and Kitchen has small bulbous balusters, with plain unramped handrails, late C17. (RCHM, Dorset I, p.8 (5).) Listing NGR: SY5771085247
