Listed Building: CHURCH FARMHOUSE (105699)

TRENT ST 5818-5918 - 18/158 Church Farmhouse 11.7.51 GV I Former Hall-house, with cross-wings, now truncated and a farmhouse. C15 cross-wing (centre of present house) runs east-west. C17 rebuilding of west wall and extensions to north and south. C19 extension on south end. Rubble-stone and ashlar walls. Slate roofs with stone gable-copings. 3 octagonal stone stacks with moulded cappings, on central ridge. Original cross-wing has a two-stage buttress at the south-east angle. Two storeys and attics. Irregular fenestration. The east and south walls of the ground floor each have a 2-light mullion window with a label, iron casements and fixed lead lights. First floor, the east end has a late C17 window with architrave, consoles, cornice and pediment. In the north wall at the same level, C15 doorway with moulded jambs and 2-centred head, rere-arch towards the outer face of the wall. This doorway probably opened into the upper storey of the former porch. The west end of the cross-wing has C17 mullion windows, from ground to attic of, four lights, three lights, two lights, four centred and with labels. The C17 north wing, on site of former hall, north wall has 3 two-light mullion windows. The west wall has a doorway with 4-centred head and square lable, above it a window of two 4-centred lights with a label. The east wall has doorway with a segmental arch in a square head. Above this is a 2-light transomed window. The C17 kitchen- wing has a 3-light C19 window on the west wall. First floor window on south wall, reset C15 window of 2 cinquefoiled lights with tracery in a two-centred head with a label and head-stops. Doorway in the west wall has a four-centred head and label over. All doors are plank and studded, C19. Extension of the house to south, rubble-stone walls and hipped slate roof, wooden door, late C19, or early C20. Interior: north wall of cross- wing has 3 C15 doorways opening into former screens, hollow-chamfered jambs and pointed arches. Western has a C15 door with ribs forming 4 trefoil- headed panels with tracery. Dining room has early C16 compartmented ceiling with moulded beams. Late C16 fireplace with moulded jambs and segmental head. Drawing room has late C16 plaster ceiling of two bays with moulded ribs forming geometrical designs, and floral or foliage designs as terminals, the plastered central beam has running vine ornament. Series of panels on the soffit with lions, roses, fleur-de-lis, butterfly (for Girdlington), dolphin (for Fitzjames), rose (for Young) and stork (for Storke). Late C16 fireplace as in dining-room. Room over Dining- room has early C16 ceiling-beams. Room over Drawing room has a C15 oak door with ribs forming 3 panels. Room over Kitchen has C17 fireplace. South window has a stained glass achievement-of-arms of Young, dated 1615. (RCHM, Dorset I, p 257(5)). Listing NGR: ST5890418506
