Description
WEYMOUTH
SY6779SE WESLEY STREET 873-1/20/407 (South side) 18/06/70 Nos.14-24 (Consecutive)
GV II
11 houses, part of terrace. Early to mid C19. Flemish bond brickwork, some painted, some rendered, slate roofs. Brick fronts remain to Nos 14, 15, 18, 21 & 22, painted to Nos 16, 19 & 20. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, each house 1-window, a sash in plain reveals above a bold canted oriel, with a sash in reveals, and a doorway with flush stone elliptical head above a shallow fanlight at ground floor. Second-floor sashes generally 12-pane, but 16-pane to Nos 21, 22 and 23, and 4-pane to Nos 14 & 16. The oriels have plain sashes, except Nos 20-24, with glazing bars, and at ground floor mainly 4-pane, but 12-pane to Nos 21-24. No.14, at the far right-hand end, has a larger 6-pane former shop window, and also returns in 2 bays to Commercial Road, in similar detail, including 2 oriels. Doors have been renewed, except for Nos 14, 21 & 24, which have the 6-panelled originals. A slight plinth, a mid plat band, and a second floor sill band, all of these in stone, and each property has a party-wall ridge stack, but the first unit has 2 larger brick stacks, below the ridge. The rear of each house has a sash, some with bars, at second floor, plus a smaller light, and a sash at ground and first floors, with a small 2-storey gabled wing to the right. The terrace was built in at least 3 stages, with a break between Nos 20 & 21, and a difference in total roof span, and the corner unit to Commercial Road has a slightly higher eaves-line. INTERIOR not inspected. Although some modifications have been made, principally in windows and doors, the terrace remains a good example of local vernacular, following the type established in the Esplanade and streets immediately adjacent. It is also complemented by remaining properties on the opposite side of the street. With the parallel Bath Street, it was a consistent piece of speculative development in the early part of the C19.
