Description
WEYMOUTH
SY6684 ELWELL STREET, Upwey 873-1/6/599 (North side) 14/06/74 Nos.74 AND 76 (Formerly Listed as: ELWELL STREET, Upwey Nos.74-84 (Even))
GV II
Two houses in row. Early C19. Squared and coursed Portland rubble, painted at the front, concrete tile. A modest pair of cottages, each with a rear gabled wing. Formerly thatched; thatch remains under the tiling for much of the roof. 2 storeys, 2 + 1 windows; 3-light timber casements with horizontal glazing bar, and narrow mullions. The windows to No.74 are carefully detailed replacements. No.74 has a part-glazed door under a C20 glazed porch, to the left, and No.76 a central part-glazed door in a C20 gabled glazed porch. Right gable stack to No.74, and gable stacks each side to No.76. INTERIOR: both dwellings have very low ceilings, and thatch remains under the tiling. No.74 has some stone-flag flooring at the rear, and a winder stair, partly enclosed by original matchboard partitioning. The gabled wing has 3-light original casements. No.76 has a central cross-passage; a transverse beam continues through to the room to the right, which has a rebuilt bressumer fire with bread-oven. The rear wing has a stone-flagged floor and a heavy transverse beam. The collar roof has roughly hewn principals. Early engravings show that these houses were built by 1824, but not in the late 1790s.
