Listed Building: PARISH CHURCH OF ST MARY (102513)

GLANVILLES WOOTTON GLANVILLES WOOTTON: ST 60 NE VILLAGE 7/13 Parish Church of St Mary 4.10.60 - II* Parish Church, south chapel c 1344, west tower c 1400, south porch C15, west doorway C16 and north nave wall, chancel and general restoration of 1876. South chapel probably for Sibyl de Glaunvyll. 1876 work for/by C W and E R Dale and Woodman, supervised by G R Crickmay. Coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, south chapel of knapped flint with hamstone ashlar dressings and bands. Nave and chancel have gable ended stone slate roofs, south chapel has roof of copper. 2 stage west tower with diagonal buttresses to west and square vice turret to the north. 4-centred chamfered west door with continuous jambs. Above is a 2-light cinque- foiled, panelled-tracery window under a 2-centred head with label. The second stage has 4 2-light trefoiled panelled tracery windows with lattice work. Above is a string course with gargoyles and an ashlar battlement with crocketted corner finials. The south porch is gabled with 2 stage angled buttresses in the west. The arch is 2-centred and has continuously moulded head and jambs. Single small trefoiled window to west. The chapel has a 3-light east window with curvilinear tracery. The 2 south windows are 2-centred with moulded labels and head stops, the east having geometric tracery and the west curvilinear. The nave and chancel have 2-light,panelled tracery windows under 2-centred heads. The east chancel window is of 3 ogee-headed lights with panelled tracery under a 2-centred head with a label. Internal features: 2 centred tower arch. 2 centred chancel arch with continuously moulded jambs with applied shafts and capitals. Squint of 3 arches between chancel and chapel. Single 4-centred arch between chapel and nave. Chapel windows have interior shafts. 2 niches with 4-centred heads in south chapel wall, that to the east containing a recumbent effigy. The chapel contains many early tiles. Early C13 Purbeck marble octagonal font. C14 chapel altar slab. Various monuments including large late C17 classical tablet with kneeling figures to John Every. Some early stained glass fragments. C17 panelling behind altar. C19 and C20 roofs. C19 pulpit and pews, the chapel pews having good quality carved ends. "RCHM Dorset Vol III", pp 95-96, no 1.
