Description

ST 7813 STURMINSTER NEWTON NEWTON (NORTH SIDE) NO 86 9/85 G.V. II House, possibly C15 with a number of later additions and alterations. Brick (Flemish bond), rubble and timber framed walls, thatched roof with gable ends. Brick stacks one third in from each end. Single storey with attic, 4 window range. All ground floor openings under wooden lintels. 2, 3 and 4-light C20 wooden casements throughout. Left gable has an exposed jointed cruck truss. Internally the plan is of 3 rooms with a cross passage. Smoke blackened timbers have been found in the roof and the building probably originated as an open hall. Internal: jointed cruck truss in attic, 2 chamfered square-headed timber doorways with shouldered jambs in cross passage, deep stopped chamfered beams and wall plates.
