ST 7813 STURMINSTER NEWTON BRIDGE STREET Town Bridge
9/122 4.10.60 G.V. I
Bridge, c 1500, widened C17. Ashlar and squared rubble. 6 pointed arches, originals visible beneath the C17 additions. Pointed cutwaters between arches, those at the centre being corbelled out to support pedestrian refuges. Weathered string courses and coping. Mentioned in Leland's Itineraries (vol vii, f.79) where it is said to have been made chiefly by "the vicare of Stourminstre and the persone of Shinnington". It bears a plaque warning that the penalty for malicious damage to the bridge may be transportation for life. It forms a group with the adjacent arched causeway and the bridge carrying the Blandford road q.v. Scheduled as an ancient monument. Hutchins, J. "The History and Antiquities
