Country House, dated 1893/4. By Sir Ernest George and Peto for Lord
Stalbridge. Red brick (Flemish bond) with dressings in Ham Hill
ashlar. Gabled, asbestos slate roof bearing diagonally placed brick
stacks. In a free 'Jacobethan' style. Mainly of 3 storeys with a
5 storey tower. 10 irregular window range. Stone mullioned and
transomed windows some containing original leaded-lights and glass.
East end of the facade has a range of 5 gables with moulded stone
copings. Entrance in fourth bay from right. This has a 3 storey
neo-Jacobean centre piece with ascending tiers of pilasters. (Doric,
Corinthian, Ionic) and a semi-circular arch. Recessed plank door.
North facade has an half-H plan with a similar fenestration and
centrepiece. To the east is a large polygonal bay window. Internally
the main rooms are intact. 2 storey great hall to the east. Several
large ashlar chimney pieces with overmantles. Neo-Jacobean moulded
and ribbed plaster ceilings. Some rooms have full height wooden
panelling. Heavy timber staircase with newel-posts bearing carved
dogs with shields and strapwork balustrades.
