Description

LEWENS LANE 1. 5193 (east side) No 3 Lewens SZ 0199 NW 2/89 14.6.52 II GV 2. Mid C17 origin, altered in C18 and later. Brick walls, colourwashed, Tiled roof with slate eaves courses. Moulded timber cornice at eaves. Brick stacks. Original building one room deep, with projecting rear wing at south end. Single storey lean- to added at rear of main wing, probably in C19. Also single storey projecting wing at north end - recent addition. Two storeys and attics. Platband at first floor level. Main entrance has pair of part-glazed doors in a classical portico with slender timber columns carrying an entablature and pedimented roof - this probably late C18. Ground floor has 4 double hung sash windows with glazing bars and key- stones to arches. First floor has 5 similar windows. Attic has 3 dormers with hipped roofs, and double hungsashes with glazing bars. South elevation, facing Parkwood Road, has 2 double hung sash windows with glazing bars and one blocked window on each floor. In the rear elevation are some double hung sash windows and some probably earlier, mullioned windows with lead lights. One of these remains on the ground floor, now covered by the lean-to extension. The projecting north wing has windows with "Gothic" style glazing on the ground floor. This room is said to have been used as a chapel, and the wing has a timber bell-cote on the roof. Internally, this room, and one first floor room, contain good C18 carved fireplace surrounds with cast iron interiors, The kitchen has deeply chamfered ceiling beams. Late C18-early C19 staircase with plain square balusters and moulded mahogany handrail. An outbuilding attached to the rear of No 2 Lewens Lane now belongs to No 3. Both houses once possibly in same ownership. Low boundary wall, with low ornamental iron railings and gates in front of houses. North of this, a higher brick wall, with brick gate piers and timber gates. South of the house, a higher brick wall continues along Parkwood Road. RCHM Monument 8. Listing NGR: SZ0132499918
