Description
WOODLANDS SU 00 NW WOODLANDS FARM
5/163 House 40m south west of Woodlands Farm 16.5.85 House
GV II
House. Early C16 and c1710, converted to house mid C19. Walls largely red brick; old tile roof, brick stacks. Two storeys. The north block is early C16, part of a larger range of a major early C16 house, another part of which survives in Woodlands Farm (qv). The east and west walls are of thin red brick laid English bond, with a diaper pattern of blue headers; on the west a flint rubble plinth with stone water table moulding is visible. This block wall truncated to the south c1710 by a rectangular building on a different alignment, with walls of red brick also in English bond. The northern part was evidently open to the roof, lit by a large window in the east and west walls probably of mullion and transom type of Woodlands Farm House. The S end of the building seems to have had an attic built on the part elevation a blocked window with a segmental head is surmounted by small 2-light window whose original oak frame survives (with later lights). Original roof of 3 bays, hipped to north; collared rafter trusses with king struts. Panelled chimney to north with rebuilt cap. External stack to south gable with battered offsets and plain shaft. Upper part of earlier, northern, section of building reconstructed when 1710 block built. In mid C19, north gable rebuilt (? after truncation of building), porch added in north west angle, interior fully floored and fitted up as house. Scattered fenestration of mostly two light wooden casements with glazing bars, largely under half brick segmental heads, introduced throughout. The building of c1710 should be connected with the house built at Woodlands by 'Mr Seymour of the Hanager Office' the main body of Woodlands Farm is slightly later but probably belongs to the same general period (see R.C.H.M. Dorset 5 (1975), p.112, for general history of site).
