Description

POOLE SZ0090SE HIGH STREET 958-1/17/31(North West side) 14/06/54 No.8 The Antelope Hotel GV II Inn, now hotel. C16, remodelled C18, refaced and roof raised early C19. Brick with stone dressings and a tiled roof. L-shaped plan with rear left wing and right-hand through carriageway. 3 storeys; 5-window range. Near-symmetrical front has a good doorway with timber cinquefoil attached columns and bell capitals to a deep cornice beneath a canted first-floor oriel with panelled apron, and second-floor blind lunette; flat brick arches over 6/6-pane sashes, 3/6-panes to second floor. A right-hand lower 2-window section has a segmental-arched carriageway beneath a C20 canted oriel and right-hand blocked segmental-arched window. 2 rear gables with half-hipped roof and late C19 2/2-pane sashes in exposed boxes. Attached rear former warehouse range has rubble plinth, tiled roof hipped to S end, with shallow pilasters between cambered brick arches to 6/6-pane sashes. INTERIOR: ground floor and much of interior remodelled in late C20; RCHME noted some C16 details in SW wing, one with Purbeck marble lintel (to ground floor left) and one with shaped corbels and hollow-chamfered lintel (not seen), and exposed ceiling beams.
