POOLE SZ0090SE HIGH STREET 958-1/17/33(North West side) 28/03/74 Nos.12 & 14 GV II* House, now house and shop. Late C16-early C17, refronted early C18, altered internally early C19, restored c1980. Stucco over rubble, close studded rear gable, stone and timber-framed rear wings, party wall stacks and a slate roof. U-shaped plan including rear wings. 2 storeys and attic; 5-window range. Parapeted symmetrical front with a plain central doorway with C20 six-panel door; good right-hand early C19-style shop front with incised pilasters, fascia and cornice and panelled stall riser with 6-pane shop window and half-glazed right-hand door; late C20 left-hand shop front with plate-glass window; first-floor 6/6-pane sashes in exposed frames. Rear has a central gable with close studding and first-floor full-width casement window with moulded mullions and shallow overhang; flanking wings have stone ground floors, that to the N with timber-framed first floor, and later extensions. INTERIOR: contains a fine right-hand first-floor plaster ceiling of 1570 with square and circles with foliage and roundels bearing the merchant's mark of Thomas Bingley; similar ceiling to the through passage to No.14; ground-floor shop has early C19 painted ceiling with flowers and corner modules. No.12 has a first-floor fireplace with 4-centre-arched lintel, and roof with the C16 and C17 trusses with cambered collars and tie beams. No.14 has an early C19 rear open-well stair with stick balusters and a curved rail. Graded for its very fine late C16 plasterwork.
