Workhouse. 1836, by Carter and Hyde. Colourwashed Flemish bond brick with hipped Welsh slate roofs and brick stacks. Greek cross plan, with octagonal centre part and administration block built across southern arm. 3-storey south front to administration block, with projecting 3- window bay to centre of 5-window range. Doorcase with moulded pilasters, carved brackets to flat hood over 2-panel frieze. gauged brick arches over 6/6-pane sashes, the first floor windows set on plat band. This block is flanked by 2 and 3-window one-storey wings with blocked windows. 3-storey 4-window axial rear wing linked to octagonal tower and flanking 3-storey E and W wings both of which having a half- hipped 2-storey wing to rear (north): similar fenestration with flat and segmental arches over 6/6 and 8/8 pane- sashes, except cast-iron 6/6-pane casements to tower and lean-to to left (west) of axial wing connecting tower to south block. Interior not inspected. The Greek cross plan is a copy of Samuel Kempthorne's designs which accompanied the first report of the 'Poor Law Commissioners in 1835. (RCHM: Dorset, Vol 2, p3).

2. 1836. Carter and Hyde, architects. Built as a workhouse. Colourwashed brick. Hipped slate roof. Greek cross plan. Front of 3 storeys. Band above ground floor. 5 ranges of sashes with glazing bars, centre 3 breaking forward. Doorcase has moulded pilasters, cut brackets and 2 sunk panels between brackets. Included for south front only.
