Description
LYTCHETT MINSTER PIT BOTTOM SY 99 SE 4/91 Saint Aldhelm's Church - II* Private chapel. Built 1898, Architect G Crickmay, for Lord Eustace Cecil. Rock-faced ashlar lower walls, with smooth ashlar above, - nave walls buttressed. Tiled roofs with ornamental ridges. Corbel course at eaves, with carved heads. Nave, chancel, west tower, south porch, north vestry. West wall of tower built as a full-width buttress,with offsets. Pyramidal stone-slate roof with weathervane. Arched openings to belfry, framing bells. Corbel course below belfry. 2-light windows in lower stage. Porch has pointed-arched opening, with shafts with moulded caps. Lancet windows to nave. Single and paired lancets to chancel. Triple lancet east window. Interior has fairfaced stone walls. Pointed timber barrel ceilings to nave and chancel. Chancel arch on responds with foliage carving. Semi- circular tower arch. Simple stone font. Furnishings appear contemporary. East window glass by Kempe. See Pevsner "Buildings of England, Dorset". Lytchett Heath.
