Description

SY 88SW 7/274 WEST LULWORTH 20.11.59 Burngate Farm House II Farm house. Possibly C16 origin, much altered. Walls part stone, part brick, part plastered. Tiled roofs, brick stacks. Part two-storeys, part two storey and attics. Plan consists of two separate wings at right angles enclosing the end of the main barn (q.v.) and with a linking porch in the internal angle. North wing, appears earlier - may have originated as a farm building, attached to main barn. South (courtyard) elevation has, on ground floor, an arched door opening now part blocked to take a window. One stone mullioned window with lead lights on ground floor, and two on first floor - made up from re-used material. North elevation has, on ground floor, door opening part blocked to take a window. Two stone mullioned windows on ground floor, made up of re-used material. Also large blocked door opening adjoining barn. One gabled half-dormer with casements. Deep chamfered ceiling beam on ground floor - possibly re-set. South wing may be of early origin, but largely remodelled in C19. Porch has brick and stone walls - incorporating some large re-used worked stones, and tiled roof. Arched doorway with part-glazed door. Above this a horizontally sliding sash window with glazing bars. Ground floor of main wing has casement window with glazing bars and "Gothic" head. First floor has one horizontally sliding sash window with glazing bars. Attic has one dormer with horizontally sliding sashes with glazing bars. Projecting block west of this wing - probably a later addition, has twin gables to road (west). South elevation has, on ground floor, two casement windows with glazing bars and "Gothic" heads. First floor has one horizontally sliding sash window and one casement, both with glazing bars. West elevation has casement windows on ground and first floors. North wing has single-storey outbuilding on east, with brick and stone walls and tiled roof. Ledged door and casement window. Beyond this a further outbuilding now converted to a cottage, with brick walls, tiled roof, and brick stack. Modern door and windows. RCHM Monument 4. Listing NGR: SY8352381630
