767/1/2 NORTH STREET 07-MAY-52 (East side) CHURCH OF ST MARTIN GV I Revision Number: 2 NORTH STREET 1. 5190 (East Side) Church of St Martin SY 9287 1/2 7.5.52. GV 2.Chancel and nave pre-Conquest (probably C11). North aisle and north arcade circa 1200. West ends of nave and north aisle late C15. Porch and south tower C16, top of tower rebuilt 1712. Whole church restored 1935-6. Purbeck rubble. Long and short quoins at north-east and south-east angles of chancel, and at north-east angle of nave. Pitched Purbeck stone slate roofs. Principal features are: chancel arch, semi-circular, with roll-moulded soffit, and half-circular hood mould which may have run down to ground level. Arcade was taken on a pier of 4 detached Purbeck shafts, replaced in C18 by a single pier with 4 attached polygonal shafts at corners: responds with 2 detached Purbeck shafts and crocket capitals: semi-circular arches. South window of nave (circa 1330) has 2 lights and cusped reticulated tracery. Tower has saddleback roofs panel over south door inscribed "Richard Coole Edward Benet Chorch Ward Ans 1712." Remarkable C12 wall paintings on north wall of chancel. C13 Painted decoration also on north wall of chancel, and on chancel arch, together with C16/C17 black letter bible. C15 Painted decoration on east wall of chancel. C16/C17 black letter inscription "Let every lawe be subject unto a higher power for there is no power but of God Rom" and parts of the Decalogue on east wall of nave, together with C15 painted decoration. Achievement of Royal Arms and another Decalogue (1713) overlies all this. North arcade has painted inscription to memory of Mr Robert Carruthers (1799) and his family. West wall has fragment of C15 black letter inscription. South wall has painted Creed, early C18. Effigy of T E Lawrence, by Eric Kennington.
