Description

SY 99 NW MORDEN CHARBOROUGH PARK 3/123 Charborough Park 20/11/59 GV I Country house. Mid C17 - enlarged c1740 and c1810 when the main facade was remodelled. Library added in early C19 and Picture Gallery in mid C19. Architect for the c1810 work probably John Nash (RCHM). Walls part ashlar stone part plastered (the C17 house was brick). Hipped slate roof with central lead flat containing 3 circular roof lights. Parapet with moulded cornice. Ashlar stacks rise from lead flat. Main house of rectangular plan with Library wing on south and Picture Gallery on east. 2 storeys and attics. West (entrance) front has portico with 4 Ionic columns and flat moulded entablature. Part-glazed door. Ground floor has 2 tall casement windows with glazing bars. First floor has 5 double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. Evidence of blocked windows at north end. At south end, a mid C19 tower of 3 stages with round-headed windows in top stage. South of this the Library wing - single-storey, of brick with flat roof and plain parapet. Blind windows. Main north front (the original entrance front), now of 11 bays, the 4 centre bays forming a flat "portico" with pediment containing Coat of Arms. 6 Ionic pilasters. Plat band at first floor level. 11 double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on each floor. Attic has 4 flat-roofed dormers with case- ments with glazing bars. Internally, entrance hall has a mid C19 pendant ceiling and carved timber dado with portrait heads. Inner hall, flanked by thick spine walls containing fireplaces, has deep round-headed recessed openings leading to main rooms. Fine C18 cut string stair with turned balusters and wreathed handrail. Paintings by Thornhill to walls, ceilings and soffits of staircase hall. Main ground floor rooms have fine enriched plaster ceilings and cornices. Library has carved dado with portrait heads. On first floor the Prince's Room has a C17 stone 4-centred arched fireplace and C18 panelling painted with classical niches in false perspective. RCHM Monument 3. Listing NGR: SY9257397886
