Listed Building: NO 9 (DIGBY ESTATE OFFICE) INCLUDING THE RAILINGS. NO 11 (103875)

CHEAP STREET 1. 1625 (North-East Side) No 9 (Digby Estate Office) including the railings, No 11 (Formerly listed as Premises occupied by Rawlence and Squarey, Surveyors). ST 6316 1/54 28.11.50. II GV 2. Late C18 or early C19 stucco block on corner of Newland. Fine 3 storeys 3 window front to Cheap Street. Modillion cornice, parapet, slate roof. 2nd floor has 3 sash windows with glazing bars missing. 1st floor has three 3-light sash windows, the lights divided by pilaster strips, glazing bars missing. These are set in round-headed sunk panels, the imposts of the arches being formed by the string course. There is a wider string at 1st floor level. Ground floor has two boldly projecting semi-circular bays, their entablature being continuous across front supported in centre by panelled pilasters on either side of doorway. Bays have sash windows retaining glazing bars with pilaster strips between sashes. Dentil cornices. Railings are unusual and have bars of flat heavy section, giving strapwork effect. Front to Newland has a 3-storey splayed bay, and another 3-storey bay beyond to the east. Beyond this, a lower range of 2 storeys, 6 window bays. Stuccoed front; capped parapet; slate gabled roof. First floor windows set higher in wall-plate at left hand end; 3-centred arched carriageway in third bay from left hand end; 3 ground floor windows to right hand. On right hand of Cheap Street front is a 1-storey wing with frontage set back. C19 Lean-to slate hipped roof. Wide paired bracket eaves cornice. Stuccoed front. French casements with margin lights in reveals, one in wall facing Cheap Street and the other in wall facing south. Nos 1 to 15 (odd) form a group with George Hotel in Higher Cheap Street. Also the north wing of the Digby Estate Office forms a group with Nos 8 to 12 (even) and the western range of No 16 (Hunts Dairies) Cheap Street. Listing NGR: ST6380216850
