MELBURY OSMOND MELBURY OSMOND ST 5707 VILLAGE The Old Post 8/103 House and The Nook II GV Former Post Office, now private dwelling, and attached cottage. Late C17 (Post House) and mid C19 (Nook). Post House: coursed rubble-stone walls. Thatch roof with gable ends, and a stone gable-coping at left hand. C20 rebuilt brick stacks at gable ends. Two storeys. 3 windows, 3-light stone mullions to ground floor, originally ovolo-moulded, right window replaced with a hollow chamfer. Separate labels over. Iron casements with lead lights. 2-light cast-iron casements to first floor with lead lights, in pegged wood frames. Front doorway at centre with stone moulded jambs, and depressed arch in a square head, C17. Panelled door, made up of old materials, C19. Flat stone canopy carried on 2 stone brackets. Interior: flagstone floors, ceiling-beams, mid-chamfered, with stepped stops, probably re-set, late C17. Roof construction, with butt-purlins and pegged collars, renewed early C19 and with C20 raising of front pitch and consolidation. The Nook: roughcast walls and hipped slate roof. Adjoining stack with Old Post House. Two storeys. One window and door. 3-light cast-iron casements with glazing-bars, wood cills. Plank door at right hand side, C20. Slate-roofed outshuts at south end are of special interest. (RCHM. Dorset I, p.160 (16))
