Description
Rescue excavation in advance of large-scale chalk removal associated with construction of the Blandford by-pass. Work started after a ditch with a V-shaped profile was observed in a chalk face. The filling of the ditch contained worked flint, Deverel-Rimbury pottery, the articulated skeleton of a dog, and a charved chalk cup; it was tentatively interpreted as the enclosure ditch of a probable settlement. In due course an area of settlement was exposed and limited excavation took place. Many post holes, pits and hut circles were apparent, though much eroded by ploughing, and further disturbed by site machinery.
