Description
AC Archaeology conducted an archaeological excavation between December 1991 and February 1992 in advance of the construction of a new Waitrose supermarket on land known locally as Chantry Fields.
The excavations '...revealed a sequence of ditched enclosures and boundaries dating to the 13th and 14th centuries. The site lies on the fringe of an area above the floodplain of the River Stour where extensive earthworks exist which may once have formed part of a sub-urban Medieval settlement and associated fields south of the river adjacent to a ford crossing.'
