EDO291 - Penny's Farm, Cranborne; evaluation 1992

Wessex Archaeology undertook the evaluation of a proposed small-scale residential development to the east of Penny's Farm, Cranborne during November 1992. The evaluation followed on from the discovery of Late Neolithic, Middle Saxon and Medieval features in Penny's Mead, the field to the NW of the site in 1982. Funded by Gascoyne Cecil Estates. Four machine trenches were excavated during the evaluation. Small quantities of Neolithic and Bronze Age flints were recovered. Some features contained large amounts of burnt flint. A single RomanoBritish cremation burial was excavated, contained in a Black Burnished Ware vessel of 3rd century date. Medieval features were also excavated. [1][2] A subsequent excavation was undertaken in 1996. The site has since been developed as Hibberd's Field housing estate [3][4].
