Description
An evaluation of a site proposed for residential development was evaluated by means of two machine-dug trenches. Both trenches revealed a deep, post-medieval black soil varying in depth from 700m to 950mm, and sealing an alluvial sub-soil horizon. This layer was around 400mm deep, of unknown date, and overlay natural subsoil. The excavators noted that all archaeological features cut through the alluvial layer; they were cut from a higher level but not observed in plan until coming onto natural subsoil.
Overall, no conclusive evidence was found for settlement or other activity on the site. Several undiagnostic subsoil features contained a range of artefacts including probable Bronze Age, medieval and post-medieval material.
