Description

Trench 1 was one of 3 evaluation trenches excavated by Terrain Archaeology in November 2002 in advance of redevelopment of Dorford Baptist Church, BRIDPORT Road, Dorchester. Trench 1 was located to the north of the church, adjacent to Bridport Road and was oriented roughly ENE-WSW. It measured 8.6m x 1.1m and was dug to a maximum depth of 1.4m. Part of the outer counterscarp bank defence of the Roman town of Dorchester was revealed occupying approximately the western 7m length of the trench and surviving to a maximum thickness of 0.6m. part of a cobbled surface containing scraps of Roman pottery occupied the eastern 1.5m of the trench.
