Description
An archaeological field evaluation of former playing fields and land adjacent to the former Hardye’s School, Dorchester was conducted by AC archaeology during September and October 1996, in advance of development of the site for housing. A total of 14 machine-excavated trenches were dug, comprising an approximate 2.7% sample of the 7.88 ha of proposed development.
Trench 2 was aligned N-S, with an E-W extension to the east near its middle. Part of a prehistoric curving ditch (2.9m wide, 0.6m deep) associated with a ploughed out barrow was excavated at the far north end of the trench with a smaller concentric internal ditch (0.8m wide, 0.1m deep). These ditches were seen to continue into trench 12. Further gullies of uncertain date and aligned E-W or NE-SW, were visible in trench 2. The barrow is the westernmost of the 'Two Barrows'.
