Description

An archaeological watching brief, carried out during improvements to the Top O’Town car park, Dorchester, was undertaken by AC archaeology during the summer of 2003. Areas 1-3, north of the café within the car park were excavated to a depth of 0.6m for wall footings. At this depth no pre-modern contexts were seen. Area 4, at the eastern pedestrian entrance to the car park from The Grove, was excavated to a depth of 0.15m, revealing only gravel, concrete and building debris. The work revealed that modern overburden to the site was present to a depth of at least 0.6m, and in no area were pre-modern intact soil profiles or features revealed. Small quantities of residual prehistoric and Romano-British finds were recovered.
