Description

An archaeological evaluation for a proposed residential development at the rear of 9 High East Street, Dorchester, was carried out by AC archaeology during June 2005. The evaluation consisted of two trenches, each measuring 5m x 1m in plan and located at the rear of the property within the former garden. The evaluation trenches revealed deep soils overlying archaeological deposits and features of Romano-British date, as well as later activity. The main archaeological component comprised part of a known N-S aligned road or town street surface, present in both trenches. In Trench 2 (oriented E-W in the northern part of the proposed development area) this road was located in the east end of the trench at a depth of c. 0.7m. A machine dug sondage in the west end of the trench encountered natural chalk at a depth of 1.1m.
