Description

Observations and recording were carried out during groundworks for construction of a two-storey building on the site of the bungalow. No in situ archaeological features were disturbed during the work, and it became clear that large areas of the site had been truncated by modern disturbance, which the archaeologists felt was likely to have removed any direct evidence for former occupation of the site. In the course of the topsoil strip and site preparation a chalk-lined well and two subsoil horizons were recorded; none of these features could be dated. The archaeologists observed a milk churn stand of probable eighteenth- or nineteenth-century date to the north of the site, and noted that the landscape setting of the site, within a well-defined terrace with earthworks in adjacent fields to both north east and south west, suggested earlier occupation.
