Description

Archaeological recording was undertaken by Exeter Archaeology in January and February 2002 at Channon’s Garage, High East Street, Dorchester during the excavation of footings and service trenches connected with the redevelopment of the site for residential use. The development works had only minor impact on the archaeological stratigraphy. The only disturbance of Roman levels was to demolition deposits. Deposits of clay were observed along the eastern edge of the site adjacent to Salisbury Street. These may represent flood deposits or perhaps part of the Roman rampart. A post-medieval stone wall was found on the Salisbury Street frontage.
