Description
Wessex Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of land within the grounds of St Genevieve's Convent, South Walks, Dorchester. This comprised a combination of both geophysical and auger surveys, and excavation of 8 machine cut trial trenches.
Transect 9 was one of three auger transects, comprising a total of 29 points, generally spaced between 2m and 5m apart, in the northern portion of the site
Auger transect 9 ran from the northern boundary of the site in a southerly direction for 90m towards the centre of the site. The northern part of the transect cut across the defences of the Roman town to reveal evidence for the two outer ditches and the counterscarp bank. The transect ran along the length of evaluation Trench 1 where it revealed the presence of a discrete 0.1m thick layer of degraded chalk and silt clay at the base of the central portion of the counterscarp bank. This layer possibly represents a deposit associated with the construction of the bank and it overlay a buried soil.
