EDO4094 - New Rugby Ground, Coburg Road, Dorchester; excavation 1988

Excavations were undertaken by Wessex Archaeology on land between Coburg Road and Maiden Castle Road, prior to the relocation of the Rugby Club. Approximately 4ha were excavated over a four week period in June and July 1988. Four ring-ditches forming part of an east-west linear barrow cemetery were recorded. Between two of the ring-ditches were two pits containing cremations and a sherd of Middle Bronze Age pottery. A linear boundary crossed the site to the south of the ring-ditches and is probably Bronze Age in date. A Late Bronze Age settlement comprising a series of post-built round houses and pits was found in the western part of the site. A single sunken-floored structure, of possible post-Roman date was found in the northwestern part of the site. A series of linear boundaries, probably associated with the medieval fields was also exposed.
