Description

AC Archaeology conducted an archaeological desk-based assessment of the site of the Dorchester Police Headquarters. The assessment included data gathered from the monitoring of geotechinical trial pits and a site visit in January 1999. The site was assessed as having high archaeological potential, but the survival of any archaeological remains is likely to be variable due to the 19th century and later use. A total of eight previously recorded archaeological sites, monuments and findspots lie within 100 m of the site. These include Maumbury Rings, Romano-British burials on the site of the police station and a brick vault or tunnel. Six geotechnical trial pits were observed. Four pits contained modern deposits and two contained an undated buried soil horizon.
