Description
Terrain Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation in St George's Churchyard, Fordington, in June 1999, in advance of the reduction of the ground level and erection of a new fence.
Two one-metre-square test pits were dug in the churchyard at the east end of St George’s Church. The test pits were 1m x 1m in plan and hand exacavated to a maximum depth of 0.5 m. A series of levelling layers associated with the extension of the east end of the church in 1907-8 were exposed. No earlier archaeological layers were encountered. Three sherds of medieval pottery and many post-medieval sherds were recovered.
