Description
In November 1993, The Birmingham University Field Archaeology Unit undertook an evaluation within the grounds of the West Dorset District Hospital, Dorchester in advance of the second phase of development.
Five machine-excavated trenches and one long exposed section were examined. No archaeological features pre-dating the 19th century have survived the extensive landscaping works.
Area 1 comprised a long east facing section previously exposed by advance bulk excavation for landscaping purposes connected with phase I. This section was cleaned and recorded. No artefacts were recovered but the earlier ground surface was visible as 0.2m of soil overlying a bitumenised 'path' surface.
