Description
H. J Moule inspected the foundations during the construction of South Court, Culliford Road, Dorchester, in July, 1892. These foundations cut the outer ditch of the Roman town defences and part of the counterscarp bank. The ditch was best preserved to the east, where the outer lip survived intact. Moule recorded the best preserved section which shows a 28ft (8.5m) length of the southern half of the ditch, which had a maximum depth of 7.5 ft (2.3m). To the south of the ditch part of the original ground surface ** thick overlain by a ** thick soil layer, which perhaps represents the remains of the counterscarp bank.
