EDO4264 - Alington Avenue and Mount Pleasant Water Pipeline; watching brief 1985

A watching brief was undertaken by Wessex Archaeology during the digging of a pipeline along the south side of Alington Avenue and immediately south of Mount Pleasant. Fieldwalking to record surface scatters was also undertaken prior to construction in January 1985. The pipe was laid to a depth of up to 1.4m within a 1m wide trench. Where the pipe crossed the arable fields around Mount Pleasant and to the south of the Came View Estate, the 10m wide easement was intensively field-walked. This included a 10m wide access to the pipeline route from the West Stafford Road. Little significant archaeology was found along side of Alington Avenue. A few small postholes and some rectangular features were found in the area adjacent to Mount Pleasant. Some Late Bronze Age-Early Iron Age pottery, Roman pottery (mainly Black-burnished ware and one samian sherd) and worked flint were recovered from the surface.
