Description
Three trial trenches (FR11E, FR11W, FR11N) were excavated by Wessex Archaeology as part of the evaluation of the course of the Southern Dorchester By-pass in 1987, in the area of the junction between the by-pass and Alington Avenue (1).
Trench FR11N lay parallel with and just to the south of Alington Avenue. A small number of shallow ephemeral features were found in this trench. Two parallel linear features may be the remains of boundaries between strips in the open field of Fordington. The other features were irregular and shallow and were not all necessarily archaeological.
Trench FR11W was aligned perpendicular to FR11N and contained a small number of shallow irregular features of no great archaeological significance.
Trench FR11E lay to the southeast of the other two trenches, parallel to a N-S field boundary. No archaeological features were discovered.
