Description

A trial trench (FR14) was excavated through the eastern side of a colluvial deposit in a dry valley running roughly N-S,by Wessex Archaeology as part of the evaluation of the course of the Southern Dorchester By-pass in 1987 (1). The excavation revealed an extensive colluvial deposit up to 1.5m thick, which contained both prehistoric pottery and worked flint. Beneath the colluvium an arc of three postholes containing Beaker pottery and a ditch oriented roughly E-W containing Bronze Age pottery. This trench was incorporated into a larger trench investigating the colluvial deposit, as part of the subsequent large-scale excavations at Middle Farm in 1987. The results from both phases were incorporated and published together (1).
