Description

Part of a watching brief undertaken by Wessex Archaeology, in 1987-1988, during the construction of the Dorchester By-pass. The northern part of the area, north of the Frome floodplain was stripped of topsoil to reveal the underlying natural gravel capping. This area was not cleanly stripped and no archaeological features were observed. Where the route of the road crossed the Frome floodplain, the topsoil was not stripped but a number of trenches were dug by the contractors for drainage. No archaeological features were observed. Part of a modern rubbish dump was observed adjacent to the River Frome. The results of this watching brief were published together with the results for the rest of the works on the Dorchester By-pass (1).
