EDO4338 - Assembly Rooms Site, North Square, Dorchester; observations and recording 1982

Building work following the demolition of the Assembly Rooms in North Square during the summer of 1982 presented the opportunity for archaeological work on a site which probabaly lay across the line of the Roman town wall and ditch system on the north side of the Roman town. The work was funded by a grant from the Dorset Archaeological Committee and conducted by Alan Graham. A nine-metre length of the southern lip of innermost ditch of the northern part of the Roman town defences was exposed. There were deep deposits of ditch fills extending for at least 25 m further to the north, suggesting the possibility of at least two ditches. To the south of the ditch there was an indistinct deposit of loose flint and limestone rubble 5 m wide which may be the robbed remains of the Roman town wall.
